Whiplash

Commonly caused by rear-end car accidents, whiplash is a neck injury that occurs due to rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck, like the cracking of a whip. Whiplash can also occur from sports accidents and other types of traumas, such as a fall.

Arthritis

Cervical spondylosis, commonly called arthritis of the neck, is the medical term for age related, wear-and-tear deterioration that occurs over time. More than 85% of people over the age of 60 are affected. Common symptoms include stiffness, headaches, limited mobility, and a "grinding" sensation when the head is turned.

Disc herniation

Natural disc herniation occurs in over half of adults over age 30. When the herniation becomes severe enough to refer to the neck, arm, or hand, it can lead to pain, numbness or weakness. While a cervical herniated disc may originate from some sort of trauma or injury, the symptoms commonly start over time.

Sprain/Strain

Cervical strains and sprains are some of the most common injuries of the neck. Both have symptoms of pain, stiffness, muscle spasms, and/or weakness. However, a cervical sprain is an injury to the ligaments of the neck, whereas a strain is an injury to the muscles or tendons of the neck. Each of these injuries can be especially bothersome, and are typically caused by the stretching or tearing of the soft tissues.
