The origin of balance is the Vestibular system in the ear. People who have frequent episodes of vertigo are said to suffer from a vestibular disorder. Tinnitis or ringing in the ears as well as hearing loss can also contribute to balance problems. Our visual input (how well we can see), our proprioception (the body’s ability to sense movement), and our cerebellum (part of the brain stem) are all factors to consider when assessing for balance disorders.

Do’s:

1.  Do get up slowly from sit to stand or from lying down to sitting up.
2.  Do sit on the edge of the bed for a few minutes upon sitting up prior to standing.
3.  Do sit or stand up slowly to limit sudden blood flow changes in the head which can contribute to feeling light headed or contribute Orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure with positional changes).

Do Not’s:

1.  Do Not start walking if you are dizzy upon standing up.

Common Myths and Truth’s:

Myth: I have to live with this.
Truth: The right treatment can completely eliminate symptoms of vertigo, dizziness and fall risk.
Myth: I must have had a stroke because I am so dizzy all the time.
Truth: The most common cause of dizziness is BPV (Benign Positional Vertigo). It is caused from tiny crystals in the inner ear break free and float around in the inner ear fluids. We can usually completely eliminate the symptoms associated with BPV after only 1 or 2 visits!!
